Russian Girl w/ Kokoshnik: A traditional piece of female headware dating back to the 17th century, but similar to other headware dating back to the 10th century. It is most closely tied to matrimony; married women were forbidden to show their hair in public, w/ the Kokoshnik it could be plaited and tucked under, out of view. Banned by Peter the great for the social elite, it was brought back by Catherine the Great, & has remained a patriotic symbol since, & is often seen at weddings.
