The Jaffna Library in Sri Lanka, before it was burned to the ground in 1981 by Sri Lankan government security forces during clashes with the LTTE. The burning of the library (one of the largest in Asia at the time) was seen as an attack on Tamil Sri Lankan aspirations and access to knowledge. Its demolition caused an uproar and has been cited as one of the twentieth century's more violent ethnic biblioclasm events. Thankfully, it was rebuilt and re-opened to the public around 1998.
